The style of Salsa we teach is the "LA Style", also known as "On1" or "Crossbody Salsa!" This is because of the predominantly linear movement of the couples dancing, although circular moves abound too.

The basic step is danced to the count of 8 beats, the 1 and the 5 being predominant. The 4 and the 8 are used as "pauses", or the "slow" counts.

This style is one of the most popular worldwide and in the UK so you'll be able to dance with thousands of other salseros and salseras globally!

There are many other styles of Salsa, including the NY or On2 Style, Cuban and even styles within these styles. They are all beautiful and wonderful in their variety. However for the beginner we recommend that you stick to one style for a while, until you have at least mastered the basics and a little beyond!

Certainly we'd like to help everyone to be able to dance socially to Crossbody Salsa before venturing into other forms of the dance.

Having said that, the SalsaMania Team enjoys dancing and teaching other styles and dances: On 2, Cuban, Rueda, Cha-cha-cha, Bachata and Merengue whenever we have the opportunity! We are often using the "free time" after class to get everyone involved in a group dance for a couple of songs, before social dancing! So expect plenty of opportunity to venture into other styles and dances in due course!

As for the history of Salsa there are many accounts, just Google "Salsa History" and you'll be amazed at the amount of information available!

We hope you'll investigate for yourself by joining us in one of our Thursday night classes! See our Class Details and Class Schedule pages for more info!
